Located on the western part of the Algarve, Portimão is one of the largest towns with its ca 70 000 habitants. The city is located along the edge of Rio Arade that once upon a time was the entryway for the many boats going to Silves, Algarves old capital. The Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians where all early trading partners before the Moorish occupation in the 11th century and the port flourished. First in 1924 the city became known as Portimão and had up until the 1980´s a large fishingindustry. Today the biggest income comes from the tourism and Portimão has several areas with hotels and apartments for all the holidaymakers. Portimão has many restaurants, cafés, bars and has kept its old charm with the local fishrestaurants and narrow cobblestreet down in the famous ?Zona Riberinha?. When it comes to shopping the city has a wide range of shops both on the mainstreet Alameda and in the Aqua shoppingcenter.
The town´s most attractive sight is the promenade along the river that goes from the harbour to the old bridge. But the more famous part of Portimão is the endless beautiful beach of Praia da Rocha, one of the most impressive beaches in all of the Algarve. On the eastern part of the beach is the old fort, Forte da Santa Catarina with it´s fantastic views of the beach and the river.
